A Four-Day Road Trip: Bangalore to Kodaikanal

 Day 1: Travelling to Kodaikanal

The early morning sun cast long shadows as we departed from Bangalore at 4:30 AM, our self-drive adventure to Kodaikanal officially underway. The roads unfurled before us, smooth and inviting, promising a thrilling journey ahead. A pit stop in Salem for a hearty breakfast replenished our energy, preparing us for the road ahead.

By 1:00 PM, we reached our destination, Hotel Tamilnadu, a government-managed property offering a comfortable yet modest stay at reasonable rates. The service, in line with many government establishments, was efficient but lacked the warmth and enthusiasm that one might find in private accommodations. Nevertheless, we were undeterred by these minor inconveniences as we embraced the chilly embrace of Kodaikanal's weather.

After a quick freshening up and a satisfying lunch, we headed to the iconic Kodaikanal Lake. The lake, ensconced amidst the hills, presented a picturesque setting. We rented double-seated bicycles and glided along the serene shores. My son, filled with excitement, opted for horseback riding, adding a touch of adventure to our afternoon. Boating on the lake was a serene and calming experience, as the fading sun painted the sky with hues of orange and pink.

The only disappointment of the day was the dinner provided by Hotel Tamilnadu, which turned out to be a bland affair, lacking the flavors we'd hoped for. This prompted us to make a decision: we would explore external dining options for the remaining days of our stay.

Day 2: Exploring Nature and Culinary Delights

The second day of our journey saw us venture into the heart of Kodaikanal's natural beauty. Our first destination was Dolphin Nose, an enchanting trek through the woods. The trail led us to a cliff edge with breathtaking panoramic views. Unfortunately, the precarious nature of the cliff made photography a risky endeavor. The memories etched in our minds would have to suffice.

Traffic proved to be a serendipitous companion, diverting our plans to unexpected gems. Our impromptu visits to the Rose Garden and Coakers Walk added colorful hues to our day. The Rose Garden, a symphony of colors and fragrances, left us enchanted, while Coakers Walk, a narrow pedestrian pathway with dizzying views, offered a different perspective of Kodaikanal's beauty.

Our culinary journey took an exciting turn as we discovered Astoria Veg, a restaurant that would soon become synonymous with culinary delight. The food was not only served promptly but was a symphony of flavors, igniting our taste buds and rejuvenating our spirits.

Returning to our accommodation, we found that the absence of evening snacks offered a chance to explore Kodaikanal’s culinary scene further. Zomato came to our rescue, delivering a feast that we savored during a leisurely night walk.

Day 3: Unveiling Hidden Gems Amidst Crowds

Day three was filled with the anticipation of escaping crowds and exploring hidden gems. Our destination was the forest gate, a gateway to Kodaikanal's natural wonders. However, a delayed opening of the gates led to an unexpected change in our plans. Patience became our ally as we explored iconic spots like Pillar Rock, Guna Caves, Pine Forest, and Moir Point. While these places were undeniably picturesque, they seemed to fall short of the hype that surrounded them.

Green Valley View Point, however, provided the solace we sought. Amidst the tranquility of the surroundings, we found ourselves lost in contemplation, away from the tourist rush. A shopping spree for local delights added a touch of Kodaikanal to our journey. Cycling around Kodaikanal Lake, free from the distraction of photography, was a liberating experience. The wind in our hair, the rhythmic pedaling, and the vast expanse of the lake before us created a memory that would forever be etched in our hearts. The serendipitous encounter with a live sketch artist added a personal touch to our day, as we watched him capture the essence of my son in just ten minutes.

Dinner from Astoria Veg, enjoyed in the comfort of our room, marked the end of another memorable day.

Day 4: Spiritual Moments and Farewell to Kodaikanal

Our final day which happened to be Dasara festival as well,  began with a visit to Kurunji Temple, a peaceful sanctuary dedicated to Lord Murugan. The temple's tranquility offered a moment of spiritual reflection before we set our sights on Silver Cascade Waterfall. Nature's grandeur stood before us, the roaring cascade a testament to the Earth's power.

With souvenirs packed and memories etched in our hearts, we bid farewell to Kodaikanal. The journey back to Bangalore was a symphony of nostalgia, each twist and turn a reminder of the adventures we'd undertaken. As we re-entered Bangalore's bustling streets, we were not just returning home but carrying with us a trove of experiences, a testament to the power of exploration, discovery, and the boundless love that makes every journey worthwhile.

Conclusion: A Journey of Discovery and Togetherness

Our four-day self-drive adventure from Bangalore to Kodaikanal was a journey of discovery, laughter, and togetherness. The misty hills, tranquil lakes, and the warmth of the people left an indelible mark on our souls. This journey was more than a vacation; it was a tapestry of experiences, a reminder of the beauty of spontaneity, and the thrill of exploration.

We had been enriched by the memories created, enlightened by the places we had explored, and brought infinitely closer by the shared experiences. Kodaikanal was not just a destination; it was an experience etched into our souls, a reminder of the beauty of travel, the allure of the unknown, and the importance of cherishing the moments that make life truly extraordinary. Our self-drive saga had concluded, but the echoes of our laughter, the vistas we witnessed, and the flavors we savored would remain eternally vibrant, reminding us of the beauty of the journey, both in Kodaikanal and in life.
